Another Team-Mate Gone

Emanuele officially announced his retirement from the project last night. Real life duties are catching up with him, and he’s suffered a loss of motivation within Gentoo, and so he’s decided to move on. This saddens me greatly, because in his short career at Gentoo, he did some pretty amazing things: he cleaned up xterm, he set the clean up of kerberos into motion (which my long time readers will note is something I utterly failed at), and …

The Kerberi

As some of you might have seen, I did finally do some updates to mit-krb5 and heimdal this weekend. The bugs assigned to kerberos team had been languishing for a couple of months, much to the dismay of quite a few users. At the moment the kerberos team consists of ryan and myself basically. Emanuele works on krb4 stuff mainly, and I have no idea where aliz has disappeared, too. Between my short time for developing these days and Ryan …

OpenAFS gets a much needed face lift

I blog so rarely these days. So, in the beginning (100 000 bugs ago) there was Daniel Robbins who got all the incoming bugs and he assigned them. Then Gentoo grew to 15-20 developers and I came along and we created bug-wranglers to handle the majority of incoming bugs (that are not recruiters, devrel or infrastructure related). As of a few weeks ago we created two new aliases: maintainer-wanted and maintainer-needed. The first is to put all the “this is …

Xterm, and um, kerberos, kinda

This past week, we released security updates for xterm. Kerberos got a bit of a clean up, and 1.4 finally got unmasked. That was fun. OK, so I need a favour. Can the people who’ve tried to use xterm-202 please report as to what went wrong with it? Like, the different behaviour in Gentoo, as compared to xterm-200. Please report in your comments to the blog, rather than bugzilla. The reason I ask this is that xterm-202 behaves …

So, I haven’t posted in a while, right? I’m not asking, even though that’s a question. Now here’s the thing. I saw that piece of crap that everyone wanted to like (even me) called Episode 1 (The Phantom Menace). The only menace was the movie itself. The phantom? that would be the direction, plot, dialogue, story, etc.

And I totally missed out on Episode 2 (Some Pretentious Title I Know Not). Apparently it was also crap …

Yeah, that’s my baby sister, she turns 25 today.

So, bunch of things. The whole co-habiting of kerberi is abandoned. There was a stunning lack of feedback as to motivation and method, so they’ll remain blocking. However, they will be cleaned up. I will make sure to at least make them both non-clobbering against e2fsutils & co.

Also, if you’re going to use crazy-assed compiler flags, the very least you can bother doing is reading the documentation about …

OK, so here’s an update to the whole heimdal/mit crisis. I sent an email to gentoo-dev mailing list soliciting opinions on two options, which I shall outline below. There is no link to the email because the mailq on the gentoo mail server is apparently backed up. I’ll update this entry with the link when there is one.

In the meantime, here’s the two options:

  1. Continue on as I have been, with prefixing things with mit- …

Heimdal update not in portage

OK, so as promised I started working on heimdal’s new ebuilds for the whole relocation-no-stomping routine that you’ve been doubtless on the edge of your seat about. And I hit a snag. Not a snag, as much as an annoyance. The autotools provide this really nice configure flag that you can see in use in mit-krb5 (whose use karltk taught me for making sylpheed-claws co-exist with sylpheed back in the day when I actually maintained stuff). This would …

mit-krb5 is settled

OK, so here’s a nice update. I finally settled the installation scheme for mit-krb5, effective from 1.4 onwards. I’m working on the kerberos-update script (not kerberos-config anymore) to install proper symlinks, but that won’t be finished till the weekend.

Does anyone here actually use krb4 themselves? If so, what stuff that needs krb4 needs a hardcoded path into /usr/athena? I looked at kth-krb (because in all fairness kerberos-update should actually be able to work with …

MIT-krb5 making progress

OK, so here’s an update. I put mit-krb5-1.4 into portage (and took out a whooooooooooooole bunch of cruft while I was in there). Now, this is important, so it’s in bold:

DO NOT EMERGE IT YET!!!

Here’s what’s happening with it so far:

Most of the utils (the telnet client/server and so on) now get installed as mit-telnet and so on rather than just ktelnet and so on. Additionally, there were nice configure arguments …
