The elections have started. They will end on the 21st of October at midnight UTC. For the next two weeks I hope all the eligible members of the foundation will cast their votes. For eligiblenon-dev voters, the best way to do that is to email the election officials:

  • codergeek42
  • fmccor
  • gustavoz
  • nattfodd

It’s best to make sure they all get your email.

I won’t be making any campaign promises. Actually, I won’t be campaigning at all …

The DevManual and all that that Implies

Stefan, yes we can avoid it in the future. We can start by not officially hosting anything with license violations. As Stuart noted, licensing is critical to FOSS. And quite honestly, as a trustee, I would be 100% hypocritical if the Foundation discovered someone violating any of Gentoo’s licenses, if we continued to distribute the devmanual in its current form.

To briefly outline my thoughts:

  1. The license violations — every contributor needs to be acknowledged on par with every other …

We’re going to be a few hours late on the voting, but it will be two weeks from the moment we start, regardless. I dropped the ball, and the date snuck up on me. I’m collecting a list of all the eligible voters right now, with help from KingTaco and antarus with those things. After that, I’ll get KingTaco to do the required stuff on woodpecker for the current eligible devs to vote. For eligible non-devs we …

Well, I’ll eat crow here and now. Ciaran was right about reopening the trustee elections. I thought there would be less interest in a second election, but what do you know, gentoo-core has been a lot more active than I would’ve thought. As a result, we now have seven nominees for the five-member board. Ciaran, this is my official apology for doubting you.

I may even step myself out of the nominees list with all this interest.

This …

So, all of a sudden a conversation started up yesterday in the #gentoo-dev channel about bank accounts, retirement accounts, 401(k)’s, and just general finance. And you thought all we did was talk about portage, didn’t you?

Anyway, our two financial experts, Doug/Cardoe and John/AllanonJL were there to dispense their advice. Food for thought, really. There’s a side of me that thinks “Oh, I’ll be active and working for decades to come. I have …

Trustees and Foundation Update

So, two weeks ago, I announced the new trustees on the mailing list. There was a little push-back, because we only had 5 nominees and 5 open positions. However, since then, there hasn’t been any movement on it. So, for now, I’m considering the people on that list of trustees to be accurate and up to date. The trustees@ email address goes to those 5 people. We are presently scheduling a first meeting.

On my todo list, I …

So our counsel got back to us with their review of our application. We do have some changes and clarifications to make to the document (I need to find a PDF editor thingy, because the original form is a PDF). So far, Donnie and Lars have given some feedback. By the way, this all happened yesterday, but I did not want to crowd everyone’s feed readers with 4 of me. You can only take so much!

Anyway, I’m …

I’ve been meaning to write this update now for a couple of days. So, the specialist at our counsel’s legal firm who deals with corporate law is now looking at our 501(c)6 paperwork. He has now all the paperwork together (including the Foundation’s articles of incorporation) to make sure it all meshes. As I say, this happened two days ago, so we’re back in the holding pattern, but we’re definitely still flying :)

Just a quick update to let you know that our application is still being reviewed by the legal team. I’m hoping to hear from them soon, so that we can begin our next steps. I wish I had more to say on the subject, but nothing’s really happened lately.

What’s down with the Foundation?

..is a question on quite a few minds lately. Overall the trustees list has been quiet forever. Seriously, we’re not talking about anything. Now, that’s not to say that things are not being done, because they are. As you know, Corey left the project. He was a trustee as well, and he was both the Treasurer and group contact for the foundation’s legal team. Two months ago or so, he finished up the 501(c)6 application …
