I have a little over half a month before my job at 3M comes to an end. In October, the entire staff of about 65 people was laid off. Most of my colleagues had their last day on December 17, 2010. My team and I are among the remainder whose last day will be February 28, 2011.
So between all the trips I’ve had to make to Minnesota with my team mates, I’ve had opportunity to think about the direction of my career, and what course corrections I need to make. A rather pleasant side effect to all that reflection was the realisation of my passion.
Empowerment. That, ultimately, is what I feel extremely passionate about. That’s what I’ve been pursuing in my work so far. My two greatest experiences were my days at Gentoo and my days involved with Customer Service at Brontes (3M). Those were the ones that allowed me to express my passion and gave me tremendous opportunities to learn more about empowerment.
Empowerment, after all, is why Linux (and even more generally, open source) has grown, and specifically why Gentoo grew as it did in those early days. Empowerment is how your customers (open source or commercial) must feel during every interaction with you. Empowerment is a great (and addictive) bond between two people, and if you can provide that feeling of empowerment to your customers, then their loyalty comes automatically.
