Weird way to come back, I know, but look: it’s a sought-after enough feature that there are a number of hacks to get it working. So the problem is this: I run irssi within screen on my server, and then connect to that screen session from my laptop, and I’ll add to the plethora of solutions for remote irssi + local notifications.
At work, I connected to the work IRC daemon from irssi running locally, and I had installed the notify plugin for irssi to pop up a message on my desktop every time I got a private message or someone mentioned my name. It was very handy, and I got spoiled by that feature. So I really wanted to get it working for my personal IRC’ing.
And all of the methods I tried only half worked, or I found too hacky to be worth it (I will not install mysql on my server, especially not for irc notifications). Well, I’ve finally got a solution that works, which I’ll talk about.
The solution I implemented, then, is as follows:
I now connect to the IRC networks using ZNC — I’ll talk about that in the next post. However, I did not want to expose that open port to the internet, from my server. I talked with Jay Pfeifer about it for a bit, and he suggested that I create a VPN tunnel between my laptop and server, using strongSwan, which minimized the exposure of the ZNC port.
Now, that’s an idea I can get behind! However, I opted to use OpenVPN instead, since it’s a much lighter weight solution (and it doesn’t require kernel modules other than the tun device: but all vpn solutions for Linux will require that or the tap device). So, now, instead of ssh’ing to my server and reattaching to my irssi screen session, I just run my openvpn connection and run irssi locally, connecting to my ZNC.
And all of this means that I can just use the plain notify.pl script and my notifications work as I need them to!
EDIT: I prefer this notify script, which uses dbus over the others.
