My New VW HYBROD

Well, I just wanted to conclude the Subaru saga by sharing a picture of its damage. I should post a picture of it in its prime, to be fair, because that's how I'll always remember it. But anyway, here you go:

My Subaru SVX: totaled

I did actually buy a new (not brand new, silly, a used car) car a few weeks ago, I've just been waiting to set up this blog site before I did, so I could show it off. As you might know, Aimee drives a Toyota Prius Hybrid. (I've been meaning to talk about some of its user interface issues, and I will, I promise). And I've been wanting to get something a little more fuel efficient as well. So I bought a VW. My HYBROD:

My Happy Yellow Buggy: it Runs On Diesel.

The shrewd amongst you will notice a lack of the word "it" in the abbreviation (while it's there in the picture title). That's because if you expand the abbreviation into the sentence, you'll find it to be grammatically correct.

At fill up, it generally takes about 11.5 US gallons (I fill it up when it reaches the 1/8th mark). And each tank gets me about 550 miles, give or take 25 miles. I haven't done the numbers yet, because in all the time I've owned it, I've only filled it up twice. I'm on my second tank of diesel now. The first ever tank was a freebie from the seller. So anyway, it's a 1998 New Beetle. No sunroof (which I'll miss having from the SVX), but it's a manual (which I did miss having in the SVX). It's got a 6 cd changer in the trunk, which is awfully 90's of it. And, of course, it's a VeeDub, so you get all the neat window and stereo tricks that go along with that.

The passenger side low beam headlight went out a few days ago, and I did replace it this weekend -- which is a bit of a production. However, the replacement didn't work either, so I'll replace the fuses next.

Now you've noticed it's a Yellow Happy car, and not the most masculine in the world. And that's perfectly OK by me. I like that it's not the first car one would associate with me. My friends and people I met always said that the SVX matched my personality. In time, I think they'll say the same about my VW HYBROD -- it's me because it's a little bit unexpected.

Anyway, I'm off to Northern California for a few days to hang out with some Gentoo folks and meet other folks and generally talk to all sorts of people about all sorts of things. I'll try and blog while I'm out there, anyway.
